Galaxy Caramel

Two fingers of de-lishness!

Years ago there was Cadburys Caramel. It was a six segment bar of chocolate, produced by Cadburys and advertised by a rabbit. Each section contained a caramel filling.

The people who make Galaxy, (that would be the people at Mars,) obviously wanted a piece of the caramel action and had to devise their own version of this best selling bar, without infringing too much copyright. They came up with this tasty treat.

Rather than go the conventional route and have a single segmented bar in the same way Cadburys did, they opted for two separate fingers each with 3 chunks. It was a genius idea and the people at both Cadburys AND Mars were pleased that neither product looked to similar to the competitor.

(Which, judging by the emails I received recently from a law firm acting on behalf of Nestle, is more than can be said for some other chocolates. Expect a Choccos vs Rolos fight in court soon.)

The Galaxy Caramel is genuinely lovely. I’d say it was one of my top 10 chocolate treats. Nice silky caramel with great Galaxy chocolate.

  1. Caramels (whether Cadbury or Galaxy) make me a little sad. Cadbury’s Caramel was always obviously the better brand – if only because it alliterates, which is always good. So I learned to view Galaxy Caramel as its poor, imitation sibling, like Babylon 5 was to Star Trek.

And then Cadbury decided to go on their Dairy-Milk-obsessed rebranding spree and take ‘Cadbury’s Caramel’ and call it ‘Cadbury Dairy Milk with Caramel’ instead. Their previously iconic product is now just one more variation in the Dairy Milk range, none of which I’m particularly enthusiastic about.

It just seems like a massive step backwards. And leaves me in some horrible inbetween place where I don’t know whether to put branding aside and fall back in love with Cadbury’s version, or make a stand as a point of principle and learn to love Galaxy’s instead. In the meantime, I’m missing out on an awful lot of caramel potential, and that makes me the real loser.
